HAF Handmade ArteFacts, leather goods

Growing up with grandfather and father of Haris tannery and their leather processing industry FAH leather, Esma took every part of the family craft to heart. From a young age, she was in production facilities and helped with her brother in processes that were easier and appropriate for the children’s age. Growing up, finishing school and college, the desire to improve the family business and give it a new dimension was born – this is how the brand HAF – Handmade ArteFacts was born and is still in its infancy, where three generations of leather craftsmanship are manifested.

Fifth generations of knowledge in family business with leather combined with knowledge gained through practice with grandfather Fehim, who is a master artisan in leather processing and father Haris owner of FAH Leather

The family leather business was started in 1971 by Fehim Frljak, and father of Esmas’s father Haris Frljak – FAH Leather. Realizing that they need some new challenges and new markets where they will not only sell processed leather and semi-finished products, Esma decides to start making Handmade ArteFacts – HAF from the family business FAH Leather, which will be the base through which they make and sell leather products in the form of rugs, pillows and stools, leather parchments from goat skin. Since the brand is still in its infancy, there is still a lot to learn on the fly. Esma’s enthusiasm and desire to give a new dimension to the family tradition is what motivates and drives the masters who work for them. For and with Esma, they are willing to learn new things and find a way to make something.

The work processes of circulating, sorting, stacking and designing, then sewing, gluing… take place above the processing, storage and dyeing areas of FAH Leather. In a space of 150 square meters, there are counters for choosing finished leather/fur, creasing machines, awls, sewing machines, stapling/stitching machines, a place for rest and relaxation, and storage of finished rugs. An addition to the space is an exhibition space where finished products are displayed.

The process consists of selecting the most attractive treated skins/furs – by structure, color, quality. Then comes the design of carpets, stools, pillows. After that, the necessary parts are carefully circulated. The process of putting together the parts that will be a quick design on a rug or stool requires an experienced and artistic eye. Here, the parts are put together, turned over and disassembled like when you put together a puzzle to get the most beautiful composition. After that, there is a process of sewing by machine or by hand, depending on what is at stake – a rug or a stool. If there is a need, individual parts are glued or stapled.
